Southampton is a growing modern university city. Southampton was an
important ship-building centre. It was known as “The Gateway To the World”
as British emigrants left from here, including the Pilgrim Fathers who left
for America. It was also the port of departure for Henry V to Agincourt,
Richard the Lionheart on the crusades and in April 1912 the RMS Titanic set
sail to America Much of the city was destroyed in the Second World War and has since been largely rebuilt. The 12th century city walls have managed to be preserved. Escorted walking tours can be taken from Bargate, with its turrets and museum. Some nice churches also survived the bombing, including 19th century St Mary’s, the Norman St Michael’s, and Holy Wood which has a 14th century tower. The docks have now been developed into a pleasant area with a marina and cafes Southampton, the “Green City” has many parks and open spaces including commons and nature reserves. There are 3 theatres; the Mayflower is the main venue for musicals, ballet and operas, the Nuffield offers modern drama and the Gantry holds live musical, theatrical and comedy performances. The City Art Gallery boasts a collection of over 2,700 works of art, spanning six centuries. The Guildhall is the city’s major venue for rock, pop and classical concerts There are many good night clubs, excellent restaurants and plenty of pubs Southampton Football Club is in the English Premier League. Southampton is home to the Hampshire County Cricket ground. Many international marine events take place at Southampton and the Solent, including Cowes week, one of the world’s major sailing events.
