 | Christmas or Christmass |
Christ = Jesus Christ, son of God born to Mary in the town on Bethlehem.
Mass = a religious ceremony in a church, or a feast or festival day on which the Eucharist is administered.
Eucharist = a central act of Christian worship in which bread and wine are consecrated (made sacred and fit for religious purpose) and consumed as representations of Christ’s body and Christ’s blood.
Christmas is literally the feast day/mass day of Christ: the day on which his birth is celebrated - traditionally with the administration of the Eucharist.
Originally, Christmas was spelt with two S’s as 'Christmass'. Today the spelling with one S is considered normal.
