1. Organisations aimed at professionalising the role of individual translators, especially those who don't already hold a degree in translation
    
2. Organisations which allow translation agencies to market their services across a shared platform, and to have a forum where the industry can talk to itself

Neither category is particularly relevant to the translation buyer direct as most of the organisations are mainly inwardly focussed, or have flaws in that their regulatory rules offer voluntary codes of conduct or the ability for individuals or companies to self-assess their own work and abilities.

Some of the very best translators hold degrees in translation but refuse to join an industry association. Your only access to such people is through a good agency.

There are also excellent agencies which won't join their national associations because they don't want to be lumped together with every other translation agency in the country.
